A leading Library System among Chilean universities, SIBUC offers integrated information services and resources, which are widely used by the university community through our website and our nine libraries.
The purpose of the Library System of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (SIBUC) is to be part of, and contribute to the mission of the University, supporting the: learning, teaching and research of the university community through virtual and on-site services, which are oriented to the users and to the development of their informational skills within a global cooperative environment.
The libraries are located throughout the four University campuses as well as in the Sótero del Río Hospital. Our libraries are considered to be an information gateway for the university community, as well as unique social spaces with special characteristics that promote research, study, cultural development and entertainment. Daily they receive an average of 5,900 users, 3,211 loan requests, 47 user inquires and instruct 71 users on efficient search, evaluation and use of information resources.
Comfortable and well equipped facilities with wireless access to Internet (Wi-Fi) include large reading and study areas and computer rooms consisting of 21,741 square meters (233,933 square feet), 38,000 lineal meters (124,672 lineal feet) of shelves, 2,917 seats, 314 computer for users, and printers, scanners and a variety of audiovisual equipment. Libraries promote the use of online services and collections, as well as all kinds of printed matter (books, thesis , booklets, music scores, etc.) and audiovisuals.
The comprehensive and carefully selected collections, formed by more than 1,700,000 items of bibliographic material, in all disciplines taught at the University, contribute to the general education of the students and to their specialized development in order to become professionals of outstanding excellence. Bibliographic materials, highly valued by the university community, are accessible through the online catalog, as well as take-out loan, and in-library-use . Bibliographic materials that are not in the Library System may be obtained from one, of more than 100 Chilean libraries, through interlibrary loan. Copies of documents that are not available in Chile may be obtained from international centers through Internet.
- Online Catalog: Via Internet, students are able to search for bibliographic material they need for their courses. The online catalog receives 28,397 searches daily.
- Metasearch: Enables users to access, and search simultaneously various databases to obtain fulltext journal articles from approximately 20,600 journal titles.
- Self Renewals: Through the online catalog, the students may self-renew the bibliographic material they have borrowed. 569 self renewals are received daily.
- Self Reservations: Allows to self-reserve books that are presently on loan by other users. Daily the system receives 380 self reservations from university students.
- Tutorials on the use of information: To learn how to search, evaluate and use information in an efficient and autonomous way, we offer general and specialized tutorials, on disciplines such as social sciences, law, nursing and education. There are also tutorials to help students elaborate their thesis and papers and learn new languages.
- Online Collection: More than 8,500 journal titles with fulltext articles, 300 E-books, and 100 international bibliographic databases to search for information published worldwide.
